Since 1985 we have been the lessees of the Caloundra Aquatic Lifestyle Centre. It all started while I was head coach of the Caloundra Swim Club (now known as Pelican Waters Caloundra Swimming Club). The lessee of the centre at the time just disappeared, and I was asked to take his place as the new lessee. Over 30 years later we are still here today, and still loving every minute of it.
The centre was first opened in 1977, and at the time it only featured a 25m pool and a small reception building where our amenities are now. An above ground indoor pool was installed shortly after we became the lessees, to fulfil the demand of our expanding learn to swim program, and Caloundra City Council added a brand new 50m pool soon after in 1986.
Our Adventure Play Pool was added in 1993, and has been a much loved part of our centre ever since, with its slide and octopus fountain a memorable highlight.
Caloundra City Council added a state of the art skate park to the centre in 2001. The skate park is one of the biggest and best on the Sunshine Coast, and visitors come from all over the region to experience it.
Our most recent upgrade was in 2010, with the addition of our new heated indoor pool and refurbishment of our existing 25m pool.
We lived on site for many years and literally lived and breathed swimming 7 days a week. Our 2 young girls Kristy and Tessa grew up in the centre, listening to us talk swimming all day every day. It must have had an effect. Kristy initially began to teach swimming, before eventually running the John Wallace Swim School as it is today. Tessa meanwhile has embarked on a successful career as a competitive swimmer, and is still competing at an international level today.Caloundra Aquatic Lifestyle Centre added a land based training centre in the late 1980’s. Since then, it has acted as a training base for numerous sporting teams, while also giving the local community a gym with a relaxed atmosphere to work towards their fitness goals.
